Everything You Need to Know to See Marshlands in Beaufort, South Carolina

When planning a visit to Marshlands, here’s a few things to keep in mind!

1. Marshlands has an exciting history.

Marshlands was built in 1814 for Dr. James Robert Verdier, who became very famous for his development of the cure for yellow fever. When the Civil War broke out, Marshlands was also used as the headquarters for the United States Sanitary Commission. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973. It’s known for being one of the best-preserved examples of early Beaufort architecture.

2. Marshlands is a beautiful sight to see.

While it is a National Historic Landmark, Marshlands is still privately owned, so you cannot tour the inside of the house. The exterior, though, is beautiful and kept in pristine condition. The two-story, white house surrounded on three sides by the porch and lovely double staircase leading to the front door is definitely worth a look! Enjoy a glimpse of what Beaufort’s top architecture looked like in the 1800s.

3. Marshlands blended two different architectural styles.

Known as a perfect blend of two very different architectural styles, Marshlands implemented both the Adamesque and West Indian influences. Typical Beaufort homes of this time frame would have had two porches, one on the top floor and one for the bottom. The West Indian approach just had one porch. The formal Adam woodwork is beautiful and a perfect complement to the style!
